Free Speech Under Siege in Sierra Leone

As dangerous thugs in the incumbent political party, SLPP, roam freely to gang up and assault innocent citizens, a mentally disabled man, popularly known as Blacker, has been arrested in Freetown. His crime? Speaking out about the hardships Sierra Leoneans are currently facing and blaming the hardships on the current President Julius Maada Bio. He was taken by police from his hospital bed where some good samaritans had paid for him to undergo hernia surgery; he is yet to undergo the surgery.

In this symbolic photo, Blacker holds his lips to show his willingness to refrain from speaking out to avoid persecution by the Sierra Leone police and the SLPP thugs.

He is well known in the country for his speeches about various issues that affect Sierra Leoneans. He has been assaulted many times by thugs who support the incumbent president Maada Bio and his political party, the Sierra Leone People’s Party, but none has ever been arrested for assaulting the mentally disabled homeless man. Blacker is accused of insulting the president and being held at the maximum-security prison, the Pademba Road, as he and a woman accused of being his accomplice have been denied bail.
